چکیده

Developing functional closure models for all the subgrid scale (SGS) physics in large eddy simulation (LES) of turbulent two-phase flows is yet a challenging task due to complicated turbulence-interface interactions. Our recent study (Saeedipour and Schneiderbauer, 2019) has revisited classical viscosity concept proposed new approach include surface tension into viscosity. It revealed an a-priori competence accurate interfacial turbulence using volume fluid (VOF) method. The present aims exploit potentials this a-posteriori manner, which could be important step towards fully-functional LES flows. On basis Favre-filtered governing equations, corrected model adopted close convective, tension, continuity SGS terms establishes LES-VOF approach. are implemented OpenFOAM-based geometric VOF solver. To perform analysis two benchmark problems considered: (i) 2D phase inversion as also used analysis, (ii) 3D freely-decaying, homogeneous isotropic flow presence initially-flat interface. results reveal that compared conventional Smagorinsky model, method reveals better performance predicting local characteristics well energy spectra, particularly at with density contrasts. Also, size distribution droplets shows agreement fully-resolved data. further unveils importance residual term equation development characteristics. original contribution lies proposing full based on concept. This can more coarse-grid industrial dispersed droplet regimes.

Large Eddy Simulation of Natural and Mixed Convection Airflow Indoors with Two Simple Filtered Dynamic Subgrid Scale Models

Large eddy simulation (LES) with a dynamic subgrid-scale model (DSM) is a powerful tool to predict indoor airflow. Some DSM models need to average the model coefficient over a homogeneous direction or need to use an additional parameter. The others are too complicated. This study proposes a simple filtered dynamic subgrid scale model (FDSM) for indoor flow without a homogeneous direction. The p...

Subgrid Modeling of Unsteady Two-Phase Turbulent Flows*

A subgrid scalar mixing and combustion model originally developed for gas phase combustion has been extended in this study to include the liquid phase. This approach includes a more fundamental treatment of the effects of the final stages of droplet vaporization, molecular diffusion, chemical reactions and small scale turbulent stirring than other LES closure techniques. As a result, Reynolds, ...

Comparison of the hyperbolic range of two-fluid models on two-phase gas -liquid flows

In this paper, a numerical study is conducted in order to compare hyperbolic range of equations of isotherm two-fluid model governing on two-phase flow inside of pipe using conservative Shock capturing method. Differential equations of the two-fluid model are presented in two forms (i.e. form I and form II). In forms I and II, pressure correction terms are hydrodynamic and hydrostatic, respecti...

A new subgrid eddy-viscosity model for large-eddy simulation of anisotropic turbulence

A new subgrid eddy-viscosity model is proposed in this paper. Full details of the derivation of the model are given with the assumption of homogeneous turbulence. The formulation of the model is based on the dynamic equation of the structure function of resolved scale turbulence. By means of the local volume average, the effect of the anisotropy is taken into account in the generalized Kolmogor...

Eddy viscosity of cellular flows by upscaling

The eddy viscosity is the tensor in the equation that governs the transport of the large-scale (modulational) perturbations of small-scale stationary flows. As an approximation to eddy viscosity the effective tensor, that arises in the limit as the ratio between the scales ε → 0, can be considered. We are interested here in the accuracy of this approximation. We present results of computational...
